The problem of foreign or added water is not really specifie of scallop muscles. Nevertheless, the astonishing ability of scallop muscle to soak up water makes the problem keen. Heavy water additions that bring about excessive loss of water when thawing scallops are clearly a falsification. Frequent abuses have been established in France in the 1980-1986 years, much so that the product might depreciate in the eyes of the consumers. Consequently French importers and administrations decided to elaborate a standard in order to eliminate excessively soaked scallops and to preserve the brand image of the product. Three points are defined in this standard : . a sampling plan (codex plan NQA 6,5 S3) . the water/protein ratio on deglazed scallop muscles as... |

Land in Manilla Shire, New South Wales, is characterised by serious soil erosion and land use is characterised by high rates of adoption of the recommended soil conservation measures. This behaviour is analysed to attempt to determine what factors are promoting soil conservation at each stage in the adoption process. The results suggest that policies to promote farmer perception of erosion problems should be formulated differently from those to promote actual adoption of the recommended measures. Perception of the problem depends mainly on the percentage of farm area that is eroded, but the likelihood of adoption depends mainly on the intensity of the erosion. The farmer's rating as an investor, the size and security of farm income, and the presence of... |

Agricultural economists in both the United States and Canada have been trying to answer this complicated question for over 12 years. Although there is no simple answer t researchers generally agree that the "right level" of advertising investment is a function of the promotion program's objective. The actual level of advertising investment in 1987 totaled $490 million in 22 dairyproducing countries. The United States t Canada t Australia t and the United Kingdom have similar levels of promotion investment per unit of milk production ($0.12 to $0.17 per hundredweight). A review of economic studies "indicates commodity advertising investment in the U.S. is probably less than optimum at its current level of around $145 million. |

Characters in male genitalia suggest that several New Guinean and Australian genera of the family Tibicinidae form a monophyletic taxon, indicated here as the “ Baeturia and related genera complex”. A new genus, Aedeastria, forms part of this complex and is erected for two New Guinean species: Aedeastria cobrops n. sp. from Sorong (Cendrawasih) and Aedeastria sepia n. sp. from Cendrawasih, Roon Island and north New Guinea. The phylogenetic position of Aedeastria is discussed and some remarks are made on the biogeography of this genus in relation to the geologic origin of Cendrawasih. |
